Round Trip: Mazatzal Peak to Suicide Ridge and Back
Douglas stevens, 1157 n. ellsworth, Mesa, AZ, USThis is a very difficult hike. You must be in excellent physical condition. Expect bushwhacking and light scrambling.
- Distance: 13.8 miles (loop)
- Elevation gain: 4,110 ft
- Estimated time: 9–10 hours (due to off‑trail sections). I believe it will be less but may to be on the safe side.
If this hike sounds interesting but you are not 100% sure you can make it please message me and we can talk about.

You must bring:
- A flashlight or headlamp (not just a cell phone)
- At least 4 quarts of water — I’ll be carrying 6 quarts myself
- Electrolytes for your water (I’ll bring extras if you don’t have any)
- More food than you think you need
Hike Details
Also known as the Y Bar–Barnhardt Loop, this route summits Mazatzal Peak, the highest point in the Mazatzal Mountains.
This challenging adventure explores one of the most rugged and scenic corners of the Mazatzal Wilderness, offering:
- Steep, rewarding climbs
- Airy ridge walking
- Expansive panoramas rarely seen by Phoenix-area hikers
If you’re looking for a full-day wilderness experience with big views and a true sense of exploration, this is it.

We’ll carpool from Leslie’s Pools. The drive to the Barnhardt Trailhead takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes.
