## Details
Willow Springs Canyon is a remote and very scenic canyon with over 500-foot-high rock walls and a good chance of seeing wildlife, such as turkey, porcupine, coatimundi, among others. This exploratory off-trail hike begins at Willow Springs Lake at an elevation of 7500 feet on top of the Mogollon Rim and follows Willow Springs Creek to the junction with Woods and Chevelon Canyons. Depending on the amount of water, we may be hiking through knee-deep or more cold water over very slippery rocks.
I have not done this hike. What this means is there will be route finding with the possibility we can get off track and the hike could be longer in length and time than expected so we could get back after 4:30. This is just part of the fun of getting off trail.
About 870 feet AEG over about 9 miles,
Initially, the canyon is wide and shallow with plenty of room on the banks for hiking. As the canyon narrows, travel is best done via rock-hopping down the stream's center crossing occasional pools. After 4 miles, we will reach the junction of Woods Canyon and Chevelon Canyon where there is ample flat ground and pine and willow shaded forest for lunch.
We will continue up Woods Canyon past the junction with Chevelon Canyon until an exit point, which will require a very steep scramble to get out of the canyon.
This is a very difficult hike. This hike will require boulder hopping on wet slippery boulders, bushwhacking, scrambling and route finding.
