What we’re about
Thanks for being a part of our Meetup group, and AMC Boston 20s and 30s. For those of you who are new, this email is to give some basic information about how you can get more involved with us and get on even more trips (our other websites have more trip postings than you’ll find here on Meetup!)
AMC Boston 20's and 30's is a group of the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC), dedicated to encouraging people in their 20s and 30s to get involved in the AMC and enjoy the outdoors.
With many volunteer leaders and co-leaders, we offer a variety of activities and events (both online and in-person). You may find us leading day hikes, backpacking, social events, local walks, trail maintenance, conservation work, kayaking, mountain biking, bicycling, skiing, camping, ice skating, and other activities. We sponsor trips throughout the year, most of which involve exploring different regions of New England. Check out some photos of our activities here!
If you want to be kept up to date with even more of our events, be sure to check the official postings at activities.outdoors.org. We do cross post some events to meetup but you have to register via the link in the description (signing up on Meetup does not approve you for the trip).
There are other ways to stay engaged with us.
Outdoors Postings: activities.outdoors.org is the official site for all AMC trip postings (everything gets posted here first). This link filters the 20s and 30s committee trips.

20s and 30s Mid State Trail Section Backpack
Location not specified yetActivity Type: Hiking, Local Walks, & Trail Running | Hiking
Difficulty: 5 - Vigorous
Trip Leader(s): Celeste Venolia, Michael Glicksman
Registration Type: Application
Please Click Here to RSVP:https://activities.outdoors.org/a5UUN000001jxsz
Audience: 20’s & 30’sDescription: Join us for a one night backpack southbound on the Midstate trail, spending the night at Muddy Pond Shelter! On day 1, we will hike around 8.2 miles with about 1,200 ft of ascent and descent from Rt 119 to Muddy Pond. On day 2, we will hike around 10.3 miles with around 1600 ft of ascent and descent from Muddy Pond to Redemption Rock. We will be aiming for a moderate pace as this trip is meant to be accessible to relatively new backpackers who are comfortable with Fall overnight temps (20s-ish) and 8-10 miles days . Some highlights along this section of trail in addition to Redemption rock and Muddy Pond include the Crow Hill Ledges and lovely views of surrounding ponds from small peaks like Mount Hunger.
Participants must have their own sleeping pad/bag that they have used in similar overnight temperatures, and a pack that comfortably carries their own food, water, and gear. Water along the mid-state trail (i.e. lower elevation near farms/towns) cannot generally be guaranteed to be safe in relation to pesticides and other human contaminants that filters and other water purification methods do not remove, so participants should be prepared to carry at least 3 liters of water on Day 1. Leaders will coordinate caching water near the campsite.
Among approved participants, we will coordinate a carspot/carpooling, make a plan for bear safe food storage based on gear currently owned by the group collectively, and confirm plans for shelter (i.e. how many people are bringing tents/hammocks or need to find a buddy to tent with in case the shelter is full).
What is the Midstate trail? It's a 90.6 mile trail in Central MA that came together in its current form by the late 1970s. It shares a Northern terminus with the Wapack trail in NH and a Southern terminus with the RI North-South trail. Learn more here .
To address unforeseen challenges such as adverse weather, unacceptable trail conditions or excessive crowding, the planned trip destination, activity and/or meeting place and time may be modified. In that event, participants may elect to join in that activity or opt out.Reminder: Please click the RSVP link above to register!

20s & 30s book club: Beaverland
Location not specified yetActivity Type: Social | Local Socials
Difficulty: 1 - Accessible
Trip Leader(s): Catherine Bentsen
Registration Type: Registration
Please Click Here to RSVP:https://activities.outdoors.org/a5UUN000001jf85
Audience: 20’s & 30’sDescription: Join AMC Boston 20s & 30s for a nature-themed book club! The book club is held roughly every other month on topics of nature, wildlife, and the environment. For our next book, we will read “Beaverland: How One Weird Rodent Made America", by Leila Philip. Discussion will be held on Monday, November 17 from 7-9pm at Mighty Squirrel Brewing in Waltham. Anyone is welcome to join, whether you’ve read all, part, or none of the book! An interest in the book topic is the only prerequisite for joining.
Synopsis: "In the rich naturalist tradition of H Is for Hawk and The Soul of an Octopus, Beaverland tells the tumultuous, eye-opening story of how beavers and the beaver fur trade shaped America's history, culture, and environment. Before the American empires of steel and coal and oil, before the railroads, there was the empire of fur. Beginning with the early trans-Atlantic trade in North America, Leila Philip traces the beaver's profound influence on our nation's early economy and feverish western expansion, its first corporations and multi-millionaires. As Leila's passion for this weird and wonderful rodent widens from her careful observation of its dams in her local pond, she chronicles the many characters she meets in her pursuit of the beaver: fur trappers and fur traders, biologists and fur auctioneers, wildlife managers, PETA activists, Native American environmental vigilantes, scientists, engineers and beaver enthusiasts. What emerges is a startling portrait of the secretive, largely hidden world of the contemporary fur trade and an immersive ecological and historical investigation of these animals that, once trapped to the point of extinction, have rebounded to become one of the greatest conservation stories of the 20th century. Now, beavers offer surprising solutions to some of the most urgent problems caused by climate change. Beautifully written and filled with the many colorful characters-fur trappers and fur traders and fur auctioneers, wildlife managers and biologists, Native American environmental vigilantes. She meets a Harvard scientist from the Blackfeet Reservation in Montana, using drones to create 3-dimensional images of beaver dams. She meets an environmental restoration consultant in the Chesapeake whose nickname is the beaver whisperer. Beaverland transports readers into scenes of beavers in their ponds and the scientists and fur trappers in pursuit of them, widening arcs of information to reveal the profound ways in which beavers and the beaver trade shaped history, culture, and our environment."Reminder: Please click the RSVP link above to register!
