Description: Continuing a series of mostly moderate hikes covering the AT in MA, this approx. 4.5-5.5-mile section is relatively short, yet includes a number of scrambles and ledge walking, beginning with a steep, rocky ascent up to Jug End (1490'), then continuing across exposed rock to Mt. Bushnell (1821') and Bushnell's South Peak (1913'). There are a number of ascents, though not as steep as the first making this a bit more strenuous than some moderate hikes. Fallen leaves on the trail can make this north-to-south hike slower and trickier than expected, however, our reward can be more unobstructed views, north towards the Housatonic River Valley, Berkshire Highlands and Mt. Greylock, and east. The descending route will take us through woodlands, a visit to an AT shelter and then back to Guilder Pond and Mt. Everett State Reservation, where we may include a walk around the pond via a connecting trail. Final hiking mileage may be more if the access road to Guilder Pond from the reservation entrance parking lot (approx. .8 miles) has been closed to cars for the winter; hike leader will check with park staff prior to the hike date. Bring water and snacks/lunch. Poles can be helpful for steepish ascents/descents and leaf-littered trails. No dogs, please. REGISTRATION WILL BE LIMITED due to limited parking at both trailheads (car spotting is required.). Rain/icy conditions cancels. Leader will provide more details on mileage and exact parking directions to registered hikers the day before the hike morning.
