Whether you're a seasoned hiker or simply seeking fresh air and new views, these outings make it easy to escape the pavement and step into nature.

Step It Up! Claudius Smith Den, Harriman State Park
Slip back in time and walk in the footsteps of notorious outlaw Claudius Smith. From his hideout, now known as Claudius Smith's Den, he ambushed travelers on the Orange Turnpike between Canada and New York. From the top of his cliff, the "Cowboy of the Ramapos" certainly had an excellent lookout. We'll enjoy those views, too, taking only in the tremendous views.

For our third bus outing, we'll step up the difficulty and step down the pace. Claudius Smith's Den Loop is a favorite moderate hike in Harriman State Park, especially in the summer when the trails are loaded with delicious wild blueberries and wineberries! (Yes, we will be snacking on the trail!) Although parts of the route will be steep, we'll hike at an easy pace of about 2 mph, taking breaks along the way.

We'll explore the cave and surrounding peaks on this 4 mile loop trail with about 950 feet of elevation and many special viewpoints. Expect rocky and uneven terrain with some scrambling. We’ll stop for lunch and take breaks along the way to soak in the scenery.

What to Bring:
Sturdy hiking footwear
2 liters of water
Lunch and snacks
Sun protection (hat, sunscreen)
Bug spray
Trail map and compass (optional)
Rain gear (just in case!)

Registration is required for each participant.
Space is limited to 14 participants, so register early!
Please register only if you are committed to attending. If plans change, kindly cancel online to open space for others.

Meeting Info:
The group will meet the bus at 8:00 AM and depart promptly by 8:15 AM. Final meeting details (likely near the George Washington Bridge Bus Station) will be emailed to registered participants 2 days prior to departure.

Cost:
Round trip transportation is only $5 members / $25 non-members.

Refund Policy: For this trip, a refund is possible if you successfully cancel online one week before the trip and your space can be filled.
