We begin and end this hike at our meeting spot by the train station. The hills and river views surrounding Cold Spring are quickly approaching peak fall foliage conditions this weekend, as we ascend Taurus up to viewpoints of the Hudson River and West Point, and after descending the same route, we hike along the Cornish trail to the ruins of the Cornish estate, then back to our scenic lunch spot on Moppy Hill in Little Stony Point. Afterwards we can visit the town of Cold Spring and see more nice views along the waterfront promenade. Frequent train service on the Metro North- Hudson line back to NYC.

We hike at a moderate pace over a distance of 6 miles, with a bit over 1000 feet elevation gain. The only one steep ascent of the day up Taurus of about 550 feet on a gravel path and stone steps is optional, as we descend on the same trail, and meet anyone who doesn’t want to go the entire distance, on our way down. The rest of the hike has very gradual ascents and descents on woods roads. You should have good hiking footwear, some water and lunch, and hiking poles if you have them, but many on this route do not use poles. (Per AMC policy our hikes are intended for adults 18 years and older, and dogs are not permitted, unless indicated otherwise).

Rain or even questionable forecast, as well as wet and slippery rocks, may cancel or modify; check website for latest updates. We meet at 10:15 in Cold Spring. The transportation information for both public transportation leaving from Grand Central and cars (AMC Trans code: 5D on the AMC New York-North Jersey website) is indicated below. Please purchase a one way ticket since there may be rides back to the city offered. Drivers park in free train station lot, behind the train station, which is near our meeting spot.
