Series Overview: Hike just one or collect the whole set as we traverse the southernmost portions of the Long Path from its start in Washington Heights north to Harriman State Park - about a dozen hikes in all. Whenever practical these will be loop hikes - it’s about the journey, not the destination, right? Many segments are rated Moderate or Easy and are suitable for new hikers, and many will also be public transit-friendly. Long Path (one-way) distance previously hiked: 20.8 miles.
Hike #7: For the first "Chain" hike of the new year we'll be tramping around Blauvelt Mountain, overlooking the Tappan Zee just south of Nyack NY. We'll be starting and ending our jaunt in tiny Tackamack North Town Park, the northernmost point visited on Hike #6. A half-mile later we'll cross into Blauvelt State Park, an area that served as a military training ground during both World Wars and as YMCA Camp Bluefields (a translation from the Dutch, "Blauvelt"). You can still see the ruins of a pre-WWI rifle range. We'll depart the Long Path where it intersects the White Trail, which we'll follow back southward for the return trip.
Distance, Elevation Gain, and Difficulty: 6.9 mi., 920 ft. elevation gain, Moderate
