Bios:
Danica Fine is a Senior Developer Advocate at Confluent where she helps others get the most out of their event-driven pipelines. Prior to this role, she served as a software engineer on a streaming infrastructure team at Bloomberg where she predominantly worked on Kafka Streams- and Kafka Connect-based projects. Her expertise in streaming systems has taken her to a number of conferences and speaking engagements over the years, giving her the chance to express her love of Kafka to anyone who will listen. She can be found on Twitter, tweeting about tech, plants, and baking @TheDanicaFine.

Kris Jenkins is the former CTO of a gold-trading company, contractor for a number of internet startups, and now Developer Advocate at Confluent. He enjoys anything that makes system architecture simpler and more reliable (like functional programming and event-based systems), and anything that puts the fun back into coding (like meetups, hackathons, and playing with new technology). Kris lives in London with his noun phrase and two subjunctive clauses.

Title:
Internet of Things Gone Wrong

Abstract:
Although rewarding in their own right, hardware projects pose their own set of challenges. Whether you’re a seasoned hacker or just delving into the world of hardware hacks, you’re bound to encounter a hurdle at some point or another. But these difficulties shouldn’t deter you!

Throughout this presentation, Kris and Danica will introduce their most recent streaming data pipelines (which should feel eerily familiar to those of you participating in the Confluent Hackathon). They’ll cover a handful of the challenges that they encountered as they built out and integrated the physical components of their projects as well as how they overcame (worked around, or outright ignored) the issues as they arose.

By the end of the talk, you’ll have a better understanding of some common difficulties you might encounter in building out a hardware-based streaming data pipeline and be more confidently-equipped for your own project.

Title:
Confluent Hackathon ‘22: In-person Office Hours

Abstract:
The Confluent Hackathon ‘22 runs virtually from May 23, 2022, to June 23, 2022. During the one month hackathon, we ask Kafka community members to build something they find interesting, useful, and/or cool. But sometimes an empty directory is an overwhelmingly blank canvas. So, to get people started, our team of experts have provided a complete end-to-end event streaming application as a set of components to steal from, but that is optional for you to use, as you could totally ignore the provided application entirely and do your own thing! At this Meetup, you can ask questions about the hackathon challenge and get in-person assistance from a technical expert to complete your personalized application before the deadline. Registration is currently open - https://www.confluent.io/hackathons/hackathon-22/.
