We will meet at Eagle Lake Road (time TBA but expect an early morning) to begin our loop, ascending via the North Ridge Trail, continuing along Cadillac Summit Road, and returning via Park Loop Road back to the trailhead. This strenuous 8-mile hike features steep climbs and rocky terrain, with a total elevation gain of over 1,148 feet, and offers breathtaking panoramic views of mountains, forests, and the Atlantic coastline.
The highlight of the hike is witnessing the first sunrise of 2026 in the continental United States at approximately 7:20 a.m., a truly memorable way to welcome the new year.
Given the winter conditions, participants should dress in layers to stay warm and dry, and bring water and high-energy snacks. Microspikes or other traction devices are required for icy or slippery sections, and a headlamp is essential for pre-dawn hiking. Hiking poles may also be helpful for stability on the steep and uneven terrain. No dogs, please.
This hike is ideal for experienced hikers seeking a physically demanding but rewarding way to start the new year. Be prepared for cold temperatures, early morning darkness, and a challenging winter climb, all culminating in a remarkable sunrise from one of the nation’s most iconic peaks.
