Michael Buckner—An Introduction to Secular Humanism

Details
On August 10th, Atlanta Freethought Society is delighted to once again present Michael Buckner who will speak, this time about Secular Humanism. Michael is a lifelong atheist (which is still slightly unusual in the world of American atheism, freethought, and humanism, which gets a lot of converts from Evangelical or Catholic Christianity, and sometimes other places as well) and long-time secular humanist.
On his mother’s side, he is at least a third-generation non-believer—his mother, like him, has never been baptized, and his maternal grandmother was also never a believer in God or any supernatural concepts. On the other hand, Michael does have (or had) many religious relatives on both sides of his family, and his paternal grandfather was an Episcopal minister.
Michael’s father became an atheist in college–cementing his status as the “black sheep” of his family–and later did stints as Executive Director of the Council for Secular Humanism under Dr. Paul Kurtz, and then as President of American Atheists.
Michael himself currently serves on the board of directors of the Atlanta Freethought Society, and has been involved with atheist, freethought, and humanist groups at the local and national level, at levels of involvement ranging from “guy who shows up to the meetings sometimes” to “elected officer” (that last strictly for local groups).
