Bundjalung Coastal NP Traverse, Evans Head to Iluka, 2.5 Days, 44kms.
Details
On this event we will do a 2.5 day, 44kms walk through coastal Bundjalung NP. We will camp in the beachfront campsites of Mibanbah-Black Rocks and Woody Head in Bundjalung National Park. Moreover, the walk is timed for very low tides during the day when we will be walking along the beach. We should see heaps of whales and seabirds the whole way.
The plan is to arrive at Club Iluka car park (Denne St Iluka) at 3PM on Saturday 25 July. We will then do a car shuffle from Iluka to Evans Head and then have dinner at a local venue (eg Club Evans RSL or the Hotel Illawong) before retiring for the evening at our Evans Head accommodation. Suggested accom is at The Bowlo Holiday Cabins which start at $164 per night, bookings can be made via wotif.com.au. People can also camp at Reflections Evans Head for $50 per night on a large site that accommodates up to six people. As all accomodation is suitable for single people and people like to have a choice, please book your accomodation in Evans Head for the night of 25 July.
The plan for the walk is:
Sunday 26 July, 20kms walk, Evans Head to Mibanbah-Black Rocks. Today is our first day of walking, we will cross the Evans River and enter Bundjalung NP, we will then walk along Chinamans Beach and Ten Mile Beach until we reach Mibanbah-Black Rocks Campground, this is a large campsite right on the beach and it features composting toilets and a water tank-NB water must be boiled or purified.
Monday 27 July. Mibinbah-Black Rocks to Woody Head 18kms. We continue along Ten Mile Beach for 18kms of walking until we reach Woody Head Campground. This is another large and well appointed campground with toilets, hot showers, drinking water and a kiosk.
Tuesday 28 July. Woody Head to Iuka. We finish our walk with a fairly short 6km walk into Iluka, we should arrive at about 10.30AM. You can then drive home or otherwise you can drive to Mullumbimby or use local public transport to get to Mullum.
If you need any explanation of the transport or accommodation options please contact me.
The cost of this meetup is $30 for the campsites at Mibinbah-Black Rocks and Woody Head, please pay this into my account by 19 June 2026. My details are Ian Dutton BSB 112879, acct no 032433687. There will also be a $20 gratuity payable at the commencement of the event.
This walk requires a lot of distance to be covered on the first two days so it is not suitable for novices. You will need or experience in multi-day walks such as the Six Foot Track or Overland Track. You will need all food from Friday morning until Sunday morning and you will need to carry all camping gear and cooking equipment the whole way. You will also need to carry about three litres of water at the start of each day. As rain is likely you will need a good quality breathable rain jacket.
NB There are some minor creek crossings but nothing more than 50cms deep as we will be walking along the beach each day during low tide. There is also a vehicle track behind the beach which is a good alternative to walking along the beach.
Safety Info: I will carry a PLB, Garmin Oregon 550 Satellite GPS and first aid kit.
