Woy Woy To Wondabyne via Mount Wondabyne and Mullett Creek Tunnell, Hard, 22kms
Details
On this walk we get to check out some of the best-known and lesser-known features of Brisbane Water National Park as we traverse the park on a 17km Woy Woy to Wondabyne Walk.
The plan is to meet at Woy Woy Station at 8.40AM, you will need to be on the 7.15AM Central to Newcastle Service which stops at Woy Woy at 8.33AM. We will then get Bus 57 which takes us about 2km before following Nagari Road into the National Park. If time permits it may be possible to also visit the Woy Woy Snake (a 60 metre long stone arrangement that forms a snake).
We then follow a series of firetails before reaching the summit of Mount Wondabyne which at 261m above sea level affords impressive views over Broken Bay and to the ocean and is a great spot for lunch.
After Mount Wondabyne we make a detour along Mullet Creek firetrail to Mullett Creek Tunnel. I have timed our arrival to coincide with the low tide which should allow us to walk through the tunnel without getting wet feet. We then take Tommo's Firetrail and descend to the very pretty Kariong Brook Falls. The last 4km sees us ascend back to the plateau along a slightly challenging track before we join Rifle Range Trail and descend to Wondabyne Station, the only train station in Australia that cannot be reached by road. I estimate that we will arrive at Wondabyne Station at about 3.30PM.
For this walk you will need your lunch, walking shoes and about 1 litre of water. Please note that this walk is rated hard due to the rough and steep nature of the walking tracks at various stages of the walk. Detailed track notes may be found here.
