I'll be out of town so Ed will be leading for me! Hike the Red Wall via Staunton Ranch Trail, a moderately challenging, ~5 miles and ~1000 feet of elevation gain. This ‘hiker only’ trail is .5 miles uphill off of the Staunton Ranch Trail. It wanders through moderately rocky terrain through a beautiful timbered meadow and concludes at the summit of the Red Climbing Wall. Near the summit, the trail splits. We'll stay left to hike to the summit. The summit is rocky but relatively flat and its views are spectacular!

This is not a beginner hike due to the starting elevation of 8100 feet, rocky terrain and ~1000 feet of elevation gain. Poles could be helpful.

Parking: Park in the Ranch Hand Parking Lot to start the Staunton Ranch Trail. Get a map of the park or ask for directions at the entrance.

This is a dog free hike.

Directions to the Trailhead: From Denver drive South on US285 to Elk Creek Road/Schaeffer's Crossing to Staunton State Park. A State Park Pass or entrance fee required. Park in the Ranch Hand Parking Lot.

What to bring...Colorado weather changes quickly! Please come prepared with appropriate hiking clothing, waterproof boots, hiking poles, microspikes, backpack and food/water. Make sure you have extra layers in your pack in case you need it. Make it the best experience possible by being prepared!

Bring food, snacks and water to enjoy on the trail.

Located near RMNP and the YMCA of the Rockies, the East Portal Trailhead is a moderate hike of 5+ miles and 840 feet of elevation gain. The trailhead sits just outside of the Park. No timed entry required to hike on this trail. The hike begins on the Wind River adjacent to the Estes Park Campground at East Portal. From the East Portal trailhead, we’ll climb to the Wind River Trail, then on to the Storm Pass Trail and the Glacier Creek Trail. From here we'll follow the unknown trail to Sprague Lake. The loop finishes with 1.3 miles back to the parking lot. Anticipating the trail will be fairly dry but be prapard for possible patches of snow and mud.

What to bring: Please come prepared with appropriate hiking clothing, waterproof boots, microspikes, backpack, snacks, and water. Make sure you have in your pack in case you need it - personal first aid kit, rain gear, hat, gloves, extra socks, and extra layers, etc. Always check the weather forecast for the trailhead before you leave home. Make it the best experience possible by being prepared!

Also bring a snack/lunch to enjoy at Sprague Lake where we'll sit for a while to enjoy the view before returning to parking.

Carpooling: Limited Parking so good idea to carpool. Arrange carpools from your neighborhood or decide on a good carpool meeting location. Contact others by private message. There are restrooms at the trailhead.

Directions to the Trailhead: In Estes Park, follow US 36 West. At the junction of US 36 and CO 66, veer left onto CO 66 and head 3.3 miles southwest going past the YMCA of the Rockies on CO 66 till it ends at a circular loop where there is limited parking.

We'll join other MUs and meet in a shaded area near the swan-boat rental. Walk the sidewalk closest to the lake just past the boat rental (East towards the museum) and look for us under the shade trees. We'll have a good view of the Ferril Lake Fountain and the side of the Pavilion stage. The setting is shaded and away from the packed crowds in front of the Pavilion. Acoustics are good and we can have a conversation! I'll have a red Meetup sign.

Bring something to sit on, your own picnic and drink or enjoy the food trucks.

Parking - Must arrive early to find parking! I've had luck along E 17th where you'll be closest to where the groups will be sitting, but must arrive by 4:30pm. Also easy to enter from E 23rd by the Zoo and park near the Duck Pond.

Directions to the group from the Pavilion: Walk South past the Pavilion to the sidewalk closest to the Swan Boat Rental. Pass the boat rental and look for us along the sidewalk under the shade trees. If you're coming from the other direction look to your left before you get to the swan boat rentals and you should easily find us. Look for the Meetup sign!
