A Basic Income (also called universal basic income (UBI), unconditional basic income, basic income guarantee), is a liveable wage provided to all citizens unconditionally. It's a complex issue that is discussed more fully on our website: https://basicincomeaustralia.com/
This group will have three main objectives:
1. Discuss and refine the concept - good ideas aren't born out of thin air, they have to be critiqued and analysed from every angle.
2. Publicise the idea and expand the public discussion - through targeted marketing campaigns and creating educational tools.
3. Campaign politically - confirming where politicians stand, promoting candidates who support it and pushing our own candidates as a last resort.

We’re kicking off our 2026 book club with Securing Women’s Economic Security, Safety, and Freedom by Australian researcher Zoe Staines — a sharp, compassionate, and deeply grounded exploration of what Universal Basic Income could mean for women’s lives in Australia.
Drawing on interviews with women across the country, Staines connects economic security to real freedom: the freedom to leave unsafe situations, to care, to rest, and to live with dignity. It’s rigorous without being dry, and unapologetically centred on women’s lived experience — exactly the kind of policy thinking we need more of.
