Bike to the Future
Details
Think of this as an informational post, since there is a 5 mile, 15 mile, 30 mile, and 62 mile course for this event, and riding together might be a challenge :) I'll leave the comments open so people can try to coordinate if there's interest in a group ride though! Bike to the Future Participants also get 20% off at Sports Basement here, in case you need some extra motivation.
The longer courses start earlier, and shorter ones start closer to noon (see below). This is NOT a race, but a fundraiser to raise more awareness and funding to improve sidewalks and add protected bike lanes to the roads of the Bay Area (specifically the El Camino Real corridor). If you're interested, here is a recent article that discusses the benefits of doing so
If you want to participate, sign up at https://biketothefuture.funraise.org/ (scroll down to the "Register" button under STEP 1 ), if you want to be involved but don't want to cycle, go to https://biketothefuture.funraise.org/page/volunteer (you'll need to follow the link to Eventbrite), or if you want to support the cause you can donate directly at https://biketothefuture.funraise.org/ (scroll down to the Donate button).

Day of the Ride:
- Pre-hydrate and eat a breakfast with electrolytes.
- Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water before, during, and after the ride.
- Drink electrolytes every time you hydrate. You need to replenish these as much as water in the heat and you can get pretty sick if you get low on them in the heat, even if you are hydrated.
- Recommend riders ride with a wet bandana, sun shirts, or sun sleeves to increase evaporation while on the bike.
- Wear light, loose-fitting clothing. Avoid wearing anything that will trap heat.
- Take breaks in the shade. If you start to feel overheated, take a break in the shade and cool down.
- Listen to your body. If you feel dizzy, nauseous, or lightheaded, stop riding and rest.
