What we’re about
We choose a dozen classic books every year and meet monthly to discuss one. Usually the person who suggested a particular book leads the discussion. We usually meet at the downtown Deschutes Public Library in one of the upstairs rooms. Meetings are mostly on the 4th Tuesday, start at 6 PM and end at 8. The people who attend have varied life experiences and enough initiative to read and thoughtfully critique the books.
I don't think any of us are closet literature professionals.
Here's the call for 2026 selection: September is our traditional meeting for the next year’s reading choices. “Classic” is vague enough to encompass Homer and the Egyptians to Cormac McCarthy in time and from sonnets to block busters in genre. We generally avoid very long or excessively abstruse selections. So have avoided Gravity’s Rainbow, Infinite Jest, The Fairie Queen, The Golden Ass and Tales of the Genji. But a passionate nomination tends to win the day. If you’re not attending, email submissions are fine. Just to be safe, pick two entries and we will figure some mechanism for choosing at the September 23 meeting.
