Back to modern history this month, or arguably, the dawn of the modern age. The present world is still shaped by the recent era of Western colonisation and one common dating of the start of this is 1492, the year Columbus made his famous voyage to the New World of the Americas (unbeknown to him at the time!).
Columbus was an Italian, but he was in the employ of the Spanish, whose country had only recently become unified, were now on the verge of becoming for a while, the richest empire in the world.
Lets meet to discuss Columbus, the late 15th century foundation of Spain and the political, religious and colonial events shaping it in the 1400s. We will then meet 2 weeks later for Part 2, focusing on the Spanish Empire in the the early 1500s.
***Rather than a presentation or lecture, the idea will be for attendees to do their own prior research which they can then contribute with at the event. You are also welcome to attend of course without researching or having anything to share.***
