Oatley: Clockmaker, Convict, Landowner

Meet at the 'Yarn Circle' near Ewen Park, Hurlstone Park and ride out to Oatley.

Can either catch the train home from Oatley or ride back through Mortdale.

Oatley was a colourful character. How can a clockmaker become a thief? Sentenced to death, commuted to transportation. Noticed by Macquarie, set up shop opposite town hall. One of his clocks is in the National Museum of Australia. He was commissioned to make the clock at Hyde park Barracks. His clock face still stands, but the mechanism has been replaced.

Need a bike in good working order, water, sunscreen, helmet. Need to be able to ride for a few hours.

The Yarn Circle is a concrete area, near the end of the L1 light rail terminus at Dulwich Hill, or a short ride from Tempe or Wolli Creek stations.

The area is just near the Lang Rd footbridge, just next to Tennent Parade.
