Lvl 3-4: Climb the Glass Elevator, 50 miles, 4500+ ft of climbing
Details
Description: We roll from Christmas Circle at Borrego Springs across from the Red Ocotillo restaurant, ride out of town, left on Montezuma, and then we climb. Work those climbing muscles as you will climb the Glass Elevator, aka Montezuma Grade, which has about 3 to 4K feet of climbing in 10 miles. We pause for a photo break at a viewpoint 9 miles from the start and then finish the climb. After about 10 miles of nice downhills we turn left and do two more climbs, one sudden one at apx 9% and another a gradual one of no more than 6%. There is one 5 or 6 mile downhill back to town. We stay together through the first 3 miles as there is no shoulder but there is two way traffic.
---- We ride back in to town and stop to take photos of enormous sculptures, like the one on this post. After changing clothes, etc., we enjoy a meal at the Red Ocotillo restaurant across the street.
**FYI: 1)**there are no bathrooms and water stops although we did once beg for these at the fire department on the way down from the Glass Elevator.
2) It takes about two hours or more (depending on where you live) to drive from north Orange County or Corona. Some of us are driving down Friday, 10/31 and are staying at hotels in Borrego Springs. Try the hotel, Hacienda Del Sol (760-767-5442), if you want to drive down and stay Friday night. It's bare bones but few hotels have availability as this is the season for the Borrego Springs area.
