Description: Smarts Mountain, at 3,240 feet, offers the closest taste of boreal forest in the Upper Valley. Standing alone and often buffeted by high winds, Smarts has a feel about it similar to the higher White Mountain peaks further north. With its open ledges on Lambert Ridge and old fire tower on the summit, Smarts affords plenty of interesting views. The climbs are mostly steady, except the last ¾ mile before the fire tower which does become quite steep and may be icy.
We will follow the Appalachian Trail to the summit and either return by the AT or make a loop via the Ranger Trail depending on conditions. Total distance is 7.6 miles and 2400ft elevation gain. We anticipate the hike will take around 6-7 hours depending on the group and trail conditions.
You should have recent (within the last 6 months) hiking experience with equivalent mileage and elevation gain. This hike is a good fit for those who have completed the Winter Hiking Program or equivalent, but should not be your first ever winter hike. Required gear includes standard winter day hiking gear for below treeline travel including snowshoes and microspikes. Trail crampons or full crampons are recommended.
If you have any questions about the hike or gear, please reach out to the leaders .
This is a womens+ hike.
