PyCon preview: Where the Sidewalk Ends: Data-Driven Urban Safety by Fay Shaw
Details
Ever wonder what happens when a data scientist gets mad about potholes and dangerous intersections? You get MOSEY - and a whole movement for safer streets. πΆπ²
Join us for a preview and rehearsal of Fay Shaw's upcoming PyCon US 2026 talk, where she'll show how Python, public data, and a healthy dose of civic frustration can actually change your city.
Fay built MOSEY (Move On Safely EverYone) β a Streamlit app that mashes up MassDOT crash data with Walk Scores to paint a fuller picture of pedestrian and cyclist safety in Malden. What started as a personal "why is this intersection so scary?" project turned into real advocacy, walk audits, and a push for safer streets legislation. This is data science that gets out of Jupyter and into the world.
Come ready to watch a great talk, eat some pizza π, and give Fay your most thoughtful (and kind) feedback to help her shine at PyCon.
Doors open at 6:00 PM - come hang, grab a slice, say hi! Talk starts at 7:00 PM π₯ No recording - but the official PyCon recording will be up later!
