Do Monsters Have Meaning?

Details
The author Stephen T. Asma once claimed that “monsters are the patron saints of our blissfully ignorant moments. They are the symbols of everything we do not yet know and fear to know.” From ancient serpents and shadowy forest creatures to modern cryptids like Bigfoot and the Mothman, monsters have long inhabited the edges of our imagination — and perhaps, our reality. At our next Gold Coast meetup, we’ll examine what mythical creatures might reveal about fear, belief, and the boundaries of human understanding:
The questions we will address at this meetup are as follows:
- What do monsters reveal about the fears and beliefs of the people who imagine them?
- Do stories about monsters help us understand what it means to be human?
- Do you think there is any truth to cryptid rumours?
After the discussion, we’ll head to the Grand Central Hotel for lunch and drinks. All are welcome to join.
PLEASE NOTE:
– Please support the venue by purchasing a drink or meal during the event.
– This is intended to be a good-natured but robust discussion. Please be respectful and prepared to have your ideas challenged. If you are easily offended, this event may not be for you.
