Hello, my name is Leo Choi. I am from Korea. First, I want to clarify that I am not an English education professional or involved in any related field.
I've been working as a cook at a hotel in Calgary through the Working Holiday Visa program. As someone who always finds learning English as a second language challenging, I thought it would be nice to practice English speaking in a comfortable environment with people in similar situations, so I decided to organize this meetup.
I enjoy visiting the Calgary Central Library or Memorial park Library in Downtown on my days off, so I plan to hold the meetup in one of its rooms.
My current English level is between B1 and B2. Based on my experience meeting many people who learn English as a second language, I believe that beginners and advanced speakers are not ideal partners for practicing together due to the difference in their levels. Therefore, I am personally looking for people with an intermediate level of English. However, this is not mandatory, and anyone learning English as a second language is welcome.
During the meetup, I plan to divide attendees into groups of 2-6 people depending on the overall numbers and have them switch members every 30mins for casual free-talking sessions on light topics. If possible, I would like to limit each person’s speaking time to within 3 minutes. I think this will give more people the opportunity to practice more.
To add some fun to the meetup, we will also play a simple game. The winner will receive a small chocolate as a prize.
Feedback on how to improve the meetup is always welcome.
I hope this meetup will be an opportunity for us to have a positive impact on each other.
Additionally, I am looking for someone to help co-organize this meetup. That way, you can save a lot of money, Also, I believe that co-hosting and running the group together will definitely have a positive impact on each other’s English skills. If you’re interested, please let me know!

Hello everyone,
It’s already been a year since I started organizing these meetups. For the past year, I’ve been personally covering the $70 monthly organizer subscription fee. While I truly believe it’s been worth it, I would be lying if I said it hasn’t been a financial burden at times.
So, I’ve decided to try a donation-based approach for those who feel moved to contribute.
There will be two ways to donate:
- You can send a donation via my email: dydwns514@gmail.com
- Or you can donate in cash at the event — I’ll be setting up a donation box at the venue.
Please feel free to contribute in whatever way is most convenient for you. Any amount from $1 or more is greatly appreciated.
All donations will go directly toward covering the group’s subscription fee, event preparation, and supporting the team that helps organize these meetups.
Over the past year, running this Meetup group has allowed me to meet many wonderful people and create meaningful experiences. If I had to pick one thing I’m most proud of since coming to Canada, it would be creating this group. That’s why I’ll continue doing my best to show my gratitude to everyone who joins our events.
Thanks
LeoP.S
I’m also looking for a new co-organizer.
If you’re someone who enjoys practicing English, making new friends, and finds great value in being appreciated by others, I truly believe this could be a great opportunity for you — just as it has been for me.
If you’re interested, you can either send me a message or simply talk to me directly at the event.

Our meetup is for people who use English as a second language at an intermediate level (not mandatory). The purpose is to practice speaking and make foreign friends. I hope you come with an open mind, ready to have comfortable and enjoyable conversations.
To briefly explain how the event will be structured, I plan to have three sections in total.
First, we’ll have a group chat session with groups of 2 to 5 people.
Next, we will have two different types of English quiz games for about 30 minutes. ( Depending on the situation, we might play only one game.)
Lastly, we’ll have a group chat session with groups of 2 to 5 people.
(The group sizes may vary depending on the total number of participants.
)
Please note that you should bring your own water, and you are free to use the restroom as needed.
I've booked at Central Library, 3-20A Idea Lab on 25/Jun/2025 from 03:30 PM to 05:30 PM
Note that even if you have joined the group, you need to register separately for this event.
