In Canberra, our politicians talk daily about productivity with AI. So how can we maximise the benefit of AI? The key is to have the mindset of asking "what can I do with AI" rather than "what can AI do for me".
AI has genuinely changed the way I work, learn and recruit. I use it to understand unfamiliar specialisms, explore transferable skills, prepare for interviews, test my thinking and turn rough ideas into something useful.
I also regularly tell it that it is wrong.
How to Recruit Right with AI: An Avid Practitioner’s Experience is a practical and positive conversation about using AI to become a more capable recruiter while keeping people, judgement and accountability at the centre of every decision.
We will explore what AI does brilliantly, where it can fall short and why a polished, confident answer is not always an accurate one. Also ensuring to cover off how AI can amplify hidden assumptions, why human review must involve genuine critical thinking and how candidate information can be handled safely by minimising personal details and using blinded information wherever possible.
The session will be interactive. Together, we will examine fictional candidate profiles, build and improve recruitment prompts, challenge an AI recommendation and look for reasoning that may be incomplete, biased or confidently incorrect.
I will also share the approach that guides my own use of AI:
Blind it. Challenge it. Learn from it.
Above all, I believe AI should help us build our knowledge rather than bypass the process of learning. My personal test is simple: if the AI disappeared tomorrow, could I still explain the concept, defend the recommendation and perform the task myself?
