We usually wrap up between 7:30 PM and 8:00 PM. Ray will be discussing "SQL 101: Building a Sandbox Using the Free Developer Edition". This is a great topic for beginners, and one we can all contribute some experience to!

Session Details:
An old joke goes, "how do you get to Carnegie Hall? Practice!"

Similarly, getting better at SQL Server takes practice. As someone just getting their feet wet with SQL Server, a sandbox environment in which you can safely "play" with SQL Server without having to worry about repercussions or fallout if you make any mistakes (of which there are bound to be plenty when you're learning SQL Server) would be beneficial for your SQL education.

In this session, we will discuss setting up a sandbox environment in which you can play to your heart's content. We will talk about downloading and installing Microsoft's free developer version of SQL Server and using it to practice various SQL tasks. I will also demonstrate some of these tasks with a preinstalled version of SQL Server and a data set to answer any questions you might have and to get you going on your journey of learning about SQL Server!

Session Details:
It seems like every time I take a few days off, something at the office breaks. As a Lone DBA for over four years this terrified me. Even after I moved into a larger team of DBAs with a proper on-call rotation, I took the work laptop with me on vacation and compulsively checked my phone.

Writing support documentation finally put my mind at ease. It may not be the most glamorous thing to do, but it pays off. Writing, maintaining, and promoting support documentation for the systems I built and supported not only put my mind at ease, but helped me understand them better.

In this session, you’ll learn about what led me down this path, how I’ve evolved my thinking about where I write my documentation, and the tools that I use. You’ll also learn tricks to keeping things up to date and making this information readily accessible to other people when they need it most.
