Presentation:

Hans Clugston, owner Hans Clugston, PLLC, a law firm based in Prescott, Arizona, for more than 20 years.

Odessa Clugston, Law, Science & Innovation Scholar, Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law. Previously Innovation Transformation Manager and Global Immersive Solutions Program Manager at The British Standards Institution (BSI).

The basic problem is clear: many people with legal problems receive inadequate or no legal assistance.

This is especially true in rural counties and legal deserts (such as Yavapai County). Arizona is in the vanguard of trying to bridge the so-called access to justice gap through providing non-attorney legal services providers. Our own Yavapai College was at the forefront of implementing the Legal Paraprofessional Program. However, many people still are unable to access legal services.

This presentation will discuss some of the issues that factor into the justice gap (access to legal training, access to legal markets, technology limitations). We hope to foster brainstorming on how to innovate around this problem by applying old solutions to these new problems, or new solutions to these enduring problems.
