Christchurch C. S. Lewis Reading and Discussion Group

Note date change: 13 March, second Friday of the month.

This month we'll read a selection of Lewis's letters. He was a dutiful (prolific?) letter writer, and set aside time each day to reply to letters from fans and friends. My intention is to pick out a selection of interesting ones from over the years from my volume of letters, edited by Walter Hooper.

No homework necessary this time -- we'll read the letters aloud on the night, and discuss briefly between each one.

Franci and I will put on a nice spread of food and drink to go with the evening. If you are willing and able to contribute a small donation, we'll have a koha/donation jar (you can also transfer to our bank account 11-7116-0034925-00 / Benjamin Hoyt). Suggested donation $5, but no obligation if you're not in a position to or would just rather not.

I am limiting it to 15 attendees due to space reasons in our living room, so please do RSVP. :-)

Note that this date is Good Friday.

This month we'll read out Lewis's 1959 essay Fern-seed and elephants. It was originally titled "Modern Theology and Biblical Criticism", which is a bit more of a self-explanatory title.

I'll quote the provocative last paragraph of the essay to pique your interest: "Missionary to the priests of one’s own church is an embarrassing role; though I have a horrid feeling that if such mission work is not soon undertaken the future history of the Church of England is likely to be short."
