This is somewhat of an obscure movie. There is not a Rotten Tomatoes review. The trailer looks good. The few reviews I found were positive.

A delightful and moving coming-of-age story. One summer, three young boys take an increasing interest in an eccentric old man who lives alone in a house surrounded by an overgrown garden. The boys form a bond with the recluse and set about weeding and replanting the garden.https://cinematheque.cia.edu/movies/the-friends/

REVIEW
The film marries these themes of coming-of-age, of nature’s implacable cycles, and of wider historical transitions, exceedingly well through the subtle weaving of a deeper, underlying question that ties them together: what should one generation transmit to the next one?
