#### Abstract

It's common to think of academia as an ivory tower with little relevance to reality. While not wrong, in this talk I hope to expand on how researchers try to bridge this moat by engaging with communities, such as those at the Dock. I will cover some of the projects I have worked on, trying to pull out how community engagement shaped and improved those projects. These include work on improving radio telescope software, mapping kelp beds, and finding technical debt in climate modeling tools. I will have to talk (sorry) about AI, particularly in my experience as an educator. Finally, I will conclude with some thoughts on how communities can leverage researchers and students.
