Data, Machine Learning and GenAI are everywhere in your company’s roadmap, but are the skills to build with them everywhere? In making life better for customers, the specialised requirements of data, ML and GenAI may make life harder for engineering teams.
From one side, access to scarce skills can be seen as a barrier to getting things done. From the other side, it leads to unnecessary pressure on those with the scarce skills to serve many demands. But can we have our cake and eat it too? Can we still achieve fast flow around scarce skills? What types of teams can help?
We'll explore these questions with the tools of Team Topologies. We'll identify the key patterns for data and ML teams, applicable to your first project and scalable to the enterprise. We'll introduce the four basic team shapes, and explore their strengths and weaknesses. We'll look at the crucial role that interaction modes play in determining team effectiveness. From these building blocks and anti-patterns, we'll combine topologies for varied scenarios, and see how the best topologies change as organisations grow, but remain optimised for fast flow.
This talk is based on the content from the book Effective Machine Learning Teams, co-authored by the speaker.
You may see your organisation in these patterns, and during this session you may also eat some cake (NB. catering dependent!) What you will get, if you're looking to improve the design of data and ML teams--or other specialisations--in your organisation, is actionable insight into achieving faster flow with effective team topologies.
