💯Foraging Dover Heights through Vaucluse for Edible Plants
Details
🌺In this forage, we will be exploring modern day Vaucluse, the lands of the Bidjigal and Gadigal peoples of Sydney, who farmed and roamed these beautiful Marshlands for foods, medicines, and their homes.
We therefore acknowledge the Bidjigal and Gadigal elders, both past and present, who are guardians of this place, as we traverse their lands in search for useful and interesting fauna, and appreciate the wonderful vistas people of this area pay millions to appreciate.
This forage is quiet interesting in that it begins in an expensive populated residential area, with excellent views of the Harbour, and ends with a stop at one of Sydneys last remaining Fish & Chip establishments, still run by the original Greek Migrant family, who still serves the areas best Fish and Chips, before we all go home.
And in between these two points, one of Sydneys most important Marshlands, and a rainforest.
Yes. Marshlands!
And a rain forest!
So what you will find here are plants and medicinals, both native and introduced, which are growing happily together in one of Sydneys more premier neighbourhood, with an abundance of groundwater, and ground water plants and animals, Including the Snapper, which both the early First nations people, and the early colonials found here in abundance, off the Rocks and Cliffs of Dover Heights.
I counted over 50♥️ plants with some edible use, and quiet yummy prepared in a thousand different ways, and many with uses the folklorists claim can heal everything from loneliness to planetary misalignment.
Things like native varieties of Spinaches, you would never have thought were spinaches.
Roots and other tubulars the first nations, the colonials, and many migrants, ate with joy. Berries galore, with alcoholic properties if prepared right, or just eaten fresh, just because they are there to be eaten and taste yummy. Various bushes, peoples since the earliest times, consumed as teas. For the sake of keeping warm, and for remedial reasons.
This forage is a really pleasant experience, and one of the very few places you can see the migratory Whales, from the comfort of peoples homes, if you have friends here, or from the cliff trail off Southhead.
Its simply lovely.
