What we’re about

*** Important info, please read! ***

Come learn Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition (latest version) in a comfortable and welcoming environment. New and experienced players are both welcome!

We’ll be playing a mix of one-shot adventures designed specifically for new players. Ask questions, learn how to play, and meet new people! Pre-made characters are provided in the event description or you can roll your own on D&D Beyond. Play time is typically around 4 hours. Please arrive on time and keep your RSVP status up-to-date! More details can be found in the individual events.

Some of the common questions we get:

What if I've never played D&D before and know nothing about it? Perfect! Lots of people who show up for Newbie Sessions have never played before. You'll be in good company and we will help you along the way!

Can I spectate a game? Unfortunately, no. We found spectators to be disruptive because they were connecting and disconnecting or forgetting to mute their microphones. We also found that many players don’t like having an audience when they play since it adds more pressure. See our FAQ for more information.

Which races and classes can I play? This may depend on your DM, but generally anything officially published and playtested is acceptable. See our Player Resources page on each event for more information.

What is a one-shot? What if I missed the last event? That's ok! One-shots are events that are completed in a single sitting. Each game is independent from the others. Just don't sign-up for the same event a second time because it's the same story.

What if I'm not very creative or bad at roleplaying? No problem. We've got you covered! If you're struggling with something, the DM will step in and help provide some ideas. Many new players struggle with the openness and freedom of D&D. We'll be there to support you throughout the entire game.

In-person Pickup D&D 5e Adventure - pls waitlist even if full!

LDS Church - Easter Building, 1939 E Easter Ave, Centennial, CO 80122, United States, Centennial, CO, US

Where: This event will be hosted at the LDS Church Building at 1939 E. Easter Ave. in Centennial, CO 80122 in a big room on the north side of the building. If you enter the building from the north side (the door with steps leading up to it), it should be just down the hall past a few closed doors and on your left. We'll have some signs that say "D&D" on doors.

A very inclusive group: While the event is at a church building, it's still NOT a religious group. There will be no religious pressuring. We're a very inclusive group of people built on Meetup and focused on "having fun playing D&D". Most attendees, historically, are not LDS church members. Please come play with us!

Venue Rules: Similar rules to when we host games at the public library:

    • Please be respectful of the building
    • Please help us clean up trash/chairs/tables at the end of the event.
    • No Alcohol/Tobacco/Marijuana/Vaping/Smoking/etc in the building.
    • Snacks are OK (and NOT required).
    • It's our "privilege" (Not a "right") to use the building as a venue.

Transport: Please arrange for your own transport to/from the event. Please don't assume that someone at the event will be comfortable giving a stranger a ride home... even after playing in a delightful D&D game together.

New to D&D?: Good. We all were once. Just come. No need to bring anything besides yourself. We'll set you up for the night with all you need to play and answer all your questions.

D&D Characters: We’ll be playing with level 3 characters. You are welcome to create your own level 3 character before hand (using standard published rules). Please plan to play a character of a LG, NG, or CG alignment (it just works better for a one-shot with strangers). Please also create your characters using the standard array system for attribute selection. If you're a newbie, you're welcome to just show up and we'll have some pre-generated characters you can use.
If you'd like to print your character sheet in advance, I've uploaded some to this google drive folder: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1FQTNcVJZiqNkZbfMqtCTL5NHgl7hxf2V?usp=sharing

Attendance: The event is free to attend. Attendance is capped so we have the right amount of people. Please RSVP with a higher level of certainty than you would for an online event because we can't just reach out to the Discord community to back-fill no-shows.
It is worth waitlisting for these events! Waitlisters help me to peer-pressure players to try being a dungeon master. If you waitlist early, there's a fair (but not guaranteed) chance that we'll open up more tables.

Are you a Dungeon Master?: Players with (or without) experience are welcome to piggy-back on these events in order to leverage our reach and community of players. If you're interested in running a game during this event, either direct message DG Wiggins (the host) through the meetup app, or leave me a comment on the event saying so and I'll increase the RSVP limit and reserve us another table! The more DMs we have, the more players we can expose to the world of TTRPGs.
Note: No charging for games through us. It's all voluntary.

    Bringing your kids: Meetup has an age policy that members must be at least 18 years of age. We enjoy seeing parents participate in D&D with their teens (either as players or DMs). Parents are welcome to do so provided;

    • You work within the meetup member policies (Found Here) AND
    • You and your teen BOTH actually play in the game AND
    • You RSVP yourself with a +1 so we can keep a good head count for RSVPs.

Please note that this is a public pick-up game. Most folks are quite pleasant but we can't guarantee anything. Demographically, attendees tend to be working or retired adults.

Feel free to ask additional questions in the event comments below.

Seasonal: In-person Pickup Homebrew D&D Adventure - Psychological Horror Setting

Seasonal: In-person Pickup Homebrew D&D Adventure - Psychological Horror Setting

LDS Church - Easter Building, 1939 E Easter Ave, Centennial, CO 80122, United States, Centennial, CO, US

How to RSVP: This is just an announcement about a unique kind of game I'll be running at the Thursday event through October. All the same rules and event description apply from the general D&D event posting here: https://www.meetup.com/denver-dungeons-dragons-newbie-sessions/events/311196283/

Seasonal Event: One year, I did an experiment around Halloween where I ran some games in a homebrew setting that would fit solidly into the "Psychological Horror" genre. We used D&D 5e as a baseline set of mechanics but largely ended up tossing out most of the 5e rules. The experiment was considered a great success. I get asked to run these all the time, but I like to keep them as a seasonal thing to look forward to.
Ultimately, it's hard to describe here, so I'll just say... "come join us", "suspend your expectations", and "plan for a very unique exploration-heavy storytelling experience".

Note for those of you that attended these games last year... I'll be running the exact same... nightmares as last time. You're welcome to play through them again. Just please don't bring any spoilers...

The Setting for this particular event is of my own homebrewing and features some very different mechanics. This setting is my own re-imagining of a realm like the Shadowfell from legacy D&D lore but with several twists. I'm not a fan of over-the-top senseless/gross horror. Adventures will be "dark and dramatic"... but still be primarily story/exploration heavy. Typical combat won't exist
A typical adventure theme will involve the players working as inception operatives to break individuals out of their self-imprisoning repetitive nightmares (this concept is partially taken from the DM section of Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft).

Pregen Characters will be provided. Or rather, for this event, we'll all be plain ol' human commoners. They'll be of a something-good alignment. Dark/Edgy/Depressing characters in a Dark/Edgy/Depressing setting is emotionally draining. Player characters are expected to be the "Hope" in the Shadowfell.

This is still an event where I will still cater to newbies. However, it is probably better to experience a standard fantasy setting game (like the ones we run on Mondays and Wednesdays) for your absolute first game.

You won't need to prep or read anything (beyond this event description) to attend. Just come ready to play and experience something... a little different.

All newbies are welcome, experienced are also welcome, but please be patient with newcomers. We get a lot of interest, please signup for the waitlist. We also have a group 2 that might have room as well. Some walk-ins are welcome at our table if we have the room.
All walks of life, gender(Male, Female, non- binary, LGBTQ etc..), types, new or experienced are welcome, so don't be shy.

    DURATION(PLEASE READ)

This is an ongoing session meeting once or twice a month, if the majority of the grp can make that happen. We will see if things need to be tweaked or changed as needed.
The goal is to start building a new community, and enjoy all the fun and games with good company on a Sunday fun day!

    ABOUT THE GAME:
Yours truly will be DMing for the primary group, and we have another DM for group 2 sessions, which has slightly different table rules than the primary group. I love to use grids and follow closely to all DnD rules with few exceptions, and don't do too much homebrew. The setting will be high fantasy, magic and adventure! It will be a tailor made campaign however that will evolve as the players run through each session. All D&D materials, races, and types, are accepted including DnD Beyond, with a standard or point buy array, and all characters will start at lvl 1 with XP as the reward mechanic.
    SAFTEY TOOLS
I expect that this game will initially be an open table in a public venue, so it makes sense to address Safety Tools.
I am open to exploring any safety tools, so please feel free to reach out to me at any time to discuss and review. The last thing I want to do is run a game where our players feel uncomfortable.
I think Sly Flourish covers the topic well in his article on D&D Safety Tools.
    https://slyflourish.com/safety_tools.html
    https://youtu.be/SjI-Dl0XJBU
I blatantly copied and pasted key items from his article below. He deserves full attribution.
    LINES AND VEILS
Please reach out to me if you have ideas or suggestions to expand this list. Here are some lines that we should not cross:
    At the Table
    No racism
    No sexism
No foul language (There are kids in the shop. I know that I occasionally let a colorful word fly, but we should attempt to keep it public friendly.)
    In the Game
    No sexual violence.
    No sexual harassment.
    No harm to children.
    No character-driven torture of animals.
    PAUSE FOR A SECOND
This is a way for players or GMs to stop what's going on in-game and pop out of character to make sure things are going in the right direction or steer the direction.
The person calling for the pause can bring up what they need, the others agree, and the game moves forward. Here are a few examples:
"Pause for a second. Let's skip the details on the sacrifice."
"Pause for a second. Can the spiders be something else?"
"Pause for a second. I don't need the details of the sex scene, can we skip forward?"
"Pause for a second. I'd like to slow down and make sure we're all cool with the decisions we're making."
