Part 1: AI for The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
With only a few years left to meet The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, an interdisciplinary and multi-stakeholder approach is required to achieve all the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Collaboration is key to accelerate the existing efforts and deploying solutions at scale. To do so, AI is best placed to assist, but only when designed ethically and human-centric.
Part 2: AI against Modern Slavery (SDG8, Target 8.7)
There are many applications of AI for Good, but where does the fight against modern slavery fit in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development?
It is under the United Nations’ SDG 8, target 8.7: calling upon states to “Take immediate and effective measures to eradicate forced labour, end modern slavery and human trafficking and secure the prohibition and elimination of the worst forms of child labour, including recruitment and use of child soldiers, and by 2025 end child labour in all its forms”
Under such a pressing deadline to completely eradicate this crime in all its forms, we need to understand how does slavery look today, how can stakeholders accelerate their work to eradicate it, and how data science and AI can be of assistance.
Adriana Bora will present her journey as a social scientist learning AI to progress her research on modern slavery. She will also present Project AIMS (AI against Modern Slavery) that she is managing at The Future Society. Project AIMS develops an AI solution to read and benchmark the statements produced by companies under the UK Modern Slavery Act (MSA). It uses Natural language processing (NLP) and computational linguistics to check the quality of companies’ reporting. This project will be open-sourced and could be further developed to fit the needs of the Australian MSA’s statements and any other non-financial reporting requirements.
The session will be an interactive one, discussing how data science and AI skills can be transferred and applied for social good.
