Casino to Murwillumbah Cycle via Rail Trail & Backroads, 3 Days, 128km

Details

The Northern Rivers Rail Trail is now half finished! The middle section between Lismore and Crabbes Creek is years away from being finished thanks to Byron Shire Council's planning imbroglios. So why not do the first and last day on the rail trail and do the backroads between Lismore and Mullumbimby on the second day!!!

The plan to do this is as follows.

Wed 27.8.25. Day 1 Casino to Lismore 30km. Meet at Old Casino Railway Station at 12.30PM. This late time is to give people the option of arranging a car shuffle with other attendees between Casino and Murwillumbah if they wish. I intend leaving my car at the golf club car park in nearby West Street. It's assumed that you will have had lunch and after a quick check and safety talk we will be ready to start riding. We start along the rail trail and ride through Bentley and then reach Lismore Railway Station at approximately 3PM. Suggested accommodation and dinner for the night is the Sherwood Hotel but there are plenty of other options for both in Lismore.

Thurs 28.8.25. Day 2 Lismore to Mullumbimby 51km. We can have breakfast in one of the cafes then it's all backroads (not rail trail today) and there are some fairly big hills to tackle. We take Woodlawn Road and have the option to stop at Bexhill General Store after 15km. We then take Corndale, Rosebank and Goonengerry Road for another 34km before arriving at Mullumbimby very uch an alternative lifestyle type of town! Accommodation is at The Middle Pub or the Mullum Motel. Dinner can be had at the RSL or one of the pubs or restaurants.

Friday 29.8.25. Day 3 Mullumbimby to Murwillumbah, 44km. Breakfast can be had at a Mullum cafe or bakery before we leave and follow Coolamon Scenic Drive. After 10km a stop can be had in Billinudgel at the 10km mark where a stop can be had at the Billi Bakery. It's then another 5km along Tweed Valley Way until we reach Crabbes Creek and the start of the Tweed Section of the Northern Rivers Rail Trail. We then follow the rail trail through the villages of Burringbar, Stokers Siding and Dunbible until after 24km we reach Murwillumbah.

It is suggested that accommodation be booked at The Imperial Hotel or Murwillumbah Motor Inn and bikes secured at the accommodation. Then at 5.10PM get the NSW Trainlink Bus leaving from Murwillumbah Station and arriving at Casino at 6.55PM. NB this must be pre-booked through the NSW Trainlink website. [NSW TrainLink bookings | transportnsw.info](https://transportnsw.info/regional-bookings/) We can then have dinner in Casino before driving back to our accommodation at Murwillumbah. NB, If you have arranged a car shuffle you can finish the event and return home on Friday evening without staying in Murwillumbah.

Saturday 30.8.25. Return home if staying in Murwillumbah.

For this event you will need a reasonably good cycling ability but you can certainly use an e-bike if you wish. Unless you have some sort of backup you will need to carry a change of clothes and toiletries with you each day so a secure hiking-style backpack with a secure top and bottom strap is handy. Please note that much of the ride is somewhat isolated with limited toilet, food and water stops so you will need to be self sufficient much of the time and you should be able to carry about 1.5 litres of water and snacks.

There will be a $30 gratuity to be paid at the commencement of the event.

Safety Info: I will carry a PLB, Garmin Oregon 550 Satellite GPS and first aid kit.
