Twelfth Night (or Whatever)

I (Dale) am off to see Twelfth Night (or Whatever) produced by the ShakesBeer Company.

The play is an adaptation of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night.

The ShakesBeer Company say they take their inspiration from back in the day, when Shakespeare's early comedies were first performed in English inns. The actors travelled from pub to pub, performing quick, cheeky, music-filled comedies and passing the hat around at the end.

“If music be the food of love, play on, give me excess of it” is one of the more memorable lines from the play. A man and woman (both twins) are shipwrecked. She cross-dresses herself as a boy and she / he fancies a duke. The duke fancies a countess. The countess, meanwhile, fancies the twin boy (who is actually a girl). Think shipwreck, twins, disguises, mistaken identities, and love triangles.

This newly adapted version of Twelfth Night will be staged upstairs in the Long Room at the Shakespeare Hotel, 200 Devonshire Street, Surry Hills. I will be at the 7:30 pm performance on Thursday 23 October 2025. The show runs for about three hours. Tickets are $34.50 - grab your own and join me!
