The Idea and the Reality: On the Knowledge Management Frontline

Details

** This session is on Tuesday, not our usual Wednesday **

This session will be conducted with some reflections on the experience of working as a knowledge manager, to prompt discussions in breakout rooms on the interaction between a knowledge manager and the organisation for which they work, including useful attributes for a knowledge manager and developing the good management of knowledge within an organisation.

The presentation will consider:
● Working as a sole knowledge manager in an organisation – one person’s experience
● Discovering and discussing an organisation’s goals for a knowledge manager
● Resilience as a knowledge manager – what traits does it take to succeed in knowledge management?
● Tactics for promoting and improving knowledge management in an organisation

Outcomes:
Participating in this event will enable you to:
● Consider how the particular context of an organisation might impact on your role as a knowledge manager
● Help you define the particular traits, skills, value and experiences you can bring to working as a knowledge manager, for yourself and your organisation.

Our Speaker:
Alison Jones is Knowledge Manager with Geoscape Australia, a government owned locational data company. In this role, she works with her colleagues to ensure that what they know is shared with the wider organisation, through conversation, the creation of innovative online spaces enabling the sharing of information and the linkage of different types of information across the organisation. Achieving this requires recognising where knowledge management can help address organisational issues and initiating conversations for change. Her professional librarian skills and knowledge underpins her work at Geoscape.

Prior to joining Geoscape Australia, Alison was inaugural Library Manager with Meyer Vandenberg, a mid-tier Canberra based law firm. She created the firm’s library service including a reference service, current awareness service and knowledge base. Promotion to Knowledge Manager saw Alison joined by a library technician to work together on automating the firm’s legal templates. Alison also oversaw the creation of a new SharePoint Intranet and a custom library space.
