See all- Push, Don’t Pull: Putting Code Reviews Back in MotionLink visible for attendees
Summary
Code reviews are supposed to help teams ship better code, faster—but what happens when the review process itself becomes the bottleneck? As our team grew, our review culture—where “everyone could review everything"—began to break down. Reviews took too long, requests piled up, and a few developers bore the brunt of the load. PRs sat idle for hours—or days—and developers started combining changes into large, hard-to-review batches just to move forward.
In this talk, I’ll walk through how we reimagined our code review process by shifting from a reactive, pull-based model to a proactive, team-owned, push-based one. We embedded review responsiveness into our culture, emphasized team-wide ownership, and built a custom Slack app to streamline coordination and surface review work in real time.
