 Eastern Devil's Path 18 miles 9500 elevation

Details

This is a tentative date and will be rescheduled if rain or excessive heat is forecast.

Preparation for the Mahoosuc Traverse. You had better enjoy climbing because the Mahoosuc has 11,000 feet of elevation gain.

Hiker Profile: Strong intermediate or higher, able to self-navigate

Eastern Devil's Path - Indian Head (2x), Twin (2x), Sugarloaf (2x), and Plateau Mountain (2x). You will receive credit for four regular-season climbs for the Catskill 3500 Club.

If I do not know you, you will be placed on a waitlist until you answer the questions. Answer all the questions. This is for the safety of everyone on the hike.

This hike involves the most difficult section in the entire 3500 system. There are bailout options with this hike. You must be able to self-navigate to attend this hike if you plan to do just part of the event. Also, if you have not made it to the top of Plateau after 5 hours, I would advise turning around.

Bailout 1 - Do the first two peaks, then return on the blue to the cars.
Bailout 2 - Do three or four peaks and return on the blue trail of your choice to your car. This option will involve a long road walk, but it is easier than the climbs.
Bailout 3 - from route 214, hitch a ride back to your car

The plan is to start on the Red Devil's Path trail (Prediger Road Trailhead), go directly up the blue trail to the Jimmy Dolan Notch. Then left onto the Devil's path to Indian Head. Reverse direction and then do the remaining Twin, Sugarloaf, and Plateau Mountain, down to route 214. Reverse direction again and return on the same route. Finally, we will ascend Indian Head and descend back down to the Jimmy Dolan Notch. From there, the blue trail takes us back to the cars. If you are slower for whatever reason, I or someone else will be returning on the same route to assist you.

This is not a guided hike; you can go at your own pace.

Water Locations:

  1. A stream with a pipe sticking out 500 feet up the ascent of Plateau Mt.
  2. A spigot on the Western side of 214

Equipment:
Headlamp with fresh batteries
Poles, shoes, or boots with good traction
Enough food and 3 liters of water for the day
NYNJTC map 141 (you will need the map for bailouts)

You must show up early to organize yourself. The hike starts on time due to the distance.

Turn on your messaging for hosts.
