My Father's Shadow @ The Phoenix
Details
Inspired by the director's childhood, and written by his brother, this looks like it will be a strong and emotional story about childhood memories, the expectations of fatherhood, and the struggle in 1990s Nigeria amongst major economic and political crises. I'll be in the cafe from 16:45 if anyone wants a drink and a natter beforehand.
From the Phoenix website:
Nominated at this year’s BAFTA Film Awards in the category of ‘Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer’, Akinola Davies Jr.’s bold and poetic film follows a father, estranged from his young sons.
Set against Nigeria’s 1993 election and told over the course of a single day’s journey into and around Lagos, Folarin and his young sons, Aki and Remi, reckon with their relationship while navigating a city on the precipice of democratic crisis. Captured through the childs-eye-view of visiting a massive – and unstable – metropolis for the very first time, details of Folarin’s life emerge and the strain in their connection becomes increasingly clear.
For tickets see the Phoenix website or buy on the door to avoid the booking fee; seating is unreserved.
