"Where Is the Centre? Japan and the Arrangement of Attention."
Existentialism is often approached through Sartre: Parisian cafés, wartime choice and the anguish of self-authorship. This talk carries the topic into Japan, where selfhood, trust and authenticity appear to follow a different grammar—one in which meaning is often carried through shared form rather than individual self-display.
The talk will close with an exploration of a view from Mt Ainslie in Canberra and with Hirayama, the toilet cleaner of Wim Wenders' Perfect Days — asking whether a person becomes most fully present not by asserting a self, but by attending to the form of life before them.
