What weāre about
Welcome to Fat Liberation London!
We are a friendly, inclusive group of fat people who wanted to find a safe space and loving IRL community who feel the same way we do about body image and fat liberation - so we started this meetup group!
This is all about connecting with people who have shared lived experience existing in a fat body, whether you are a small or mid-size fat person, or a large, super or infinifat. We have monthly coffee meet ups in an accessible, fat-friendly cozy space, and will be looking at getting people together for board games, drinks, book clubs focussing on fat writings, picnics, group tickets to fat-focussed events and more as we grow.
Community is so important and it can be so healing to find people who understand your experience and celebrate the unique complexities it brings to who we are. This is not a space focussed on changing who we are or our bodies, and with this in mind, weāve got some guidelines for our space to help everyone feel safe!
NOTE: PLEASE READ GUIDELINES IN FULL BEFORE ATTENDING ANY OF OUR EVENTS!
In this group, we are:
- Fat-First. Fat Liberation London was created for fat people, by fat people. Our community therefore centres large fat+ bodies first. We use self-identifying terms that are common in fat spaces (i.e. midsize, small fat, large fat, superfat and infinifat), and ask community members in smaller bodies to be considerate of the fact that our community prioritises the most marginalised bodies.
- Rooted in community. We want to bring together people with a shared experience together to have fun and build relationships in a friendly, accessible and non-judgemental space.
- A safe space for intersectional identities and marginalised bodies. We aim to champion anti-racism, LGBTQIA+ inclusivity, accessibility for disabled and neurodivergent people, and anti-discrimination of all kinds. While it is an unlikely occurrence, please be aware that anyone creating unnecessary conflict or displaying malicious, prejudiced or discriminatory behaviour will be asked to leave our events. This is not a singles group! We're creating a safe space for fat people to come together in joyful friendship.
- Mindful of individual differences. We know that everyone will be in different places in their fat-liberation journey, and recognise that some discussion topics, events and venues may be more accessible to some than others. We ask our community to utilise content warnings for potentially triggering conversations that may come up in events. We also aim to provide as much information as possible about event spaces accessibility.
Upcoming events (4+)
See all- Fat Bike RideMarble Arch - Hyde Park, London
Get your wheels, we ride at dawn! š“āāļø
Well, not exactlyā¦Weāre going on a fat bike ride! Itāll be a casual glide around the park. Youāre welcome to bring a bike and a helmet. Helmets are encouraged, though weāre planning on avoiding roads.
And if you want to hire a bike (like our organisers) then hereās howā¦
https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/cycling/santander-cycles/how-it-works
Once weāve hired out bikes on the day then weāll also be able to help too.
Weāll meet at Marble Arch and hopefully most of us can collect a bike there. From there, weāll have a route, with plenty of choices to shorten or extend ride depending on the mood on the day. We wonāt ride off without anyone and weāll aim to add in toilet breaks when needed. If you need to stop, slow down or leave for any reason, then just let us know. Everyone is encouraged and welcomed to say how theyāre feeling.
Feel free to bring along picnic-y supplies as Iād imagine a bit of stopping. š§ŗ
This ride is for fun, we wonāt be racing around and with all our fat activities, we go at the groupās pace- no one gets left behind and no one is made to feel awkward for wanting rest / or to slow down. That said, it might be sweat inducing, so Iād recommend loose breathable layers, to dress up and dress down when it suits you. This is the kind of activity you can wear a sundress to if you wish! āļø
A note on weather, if itās looking dreadful, we will postpone. Weāll do all we can to give you a heads up if the weather is too iffy. Light rain that wonāt last the whole time will not put us off- but might impact what you wish to wear.

According to google, there is a weight limit for the bikes. Anecdotally, some FLL members have ignored this limit and ridden with no issues or breakage. We appreciate everyone will feel differently about the limits, so the limits are below for your information...
The total weight limit for a Santander Cycle is 115 kilograms (approximately 18 stone or 253.5 pounds).
We also appreciate some of us don't know our weight, which might make this difficult. Please feel free to reach out to Martin or Megan if you want to have a more nuanced talk about the weight limit.Weāre looking forward to hosting this event - the goal is to enjoy movement, wind in your face, a smile in your heart.
If you have trepidation but a yearning, then please reach out to our organisers, as weāre keen to make this a joyous occasion! Bike riding, like many activities, is sometimes gate kept from fats- but we want to burn some rubber and feel free too! Some come along for some wild and wonderful fat fun! š©·
- Book Club: Fat Body Work by Charlotte CooperLink visible for attendees
Join Fat Lib London and Fat Club Brighton to discuss 'Fat Body Work' By Charlotte Cooper.
Fat Body Work concerns the things I have learned from moving my body. The book invites you into a rich, deeply personal and politically charged exploration of movement across the life course. Body work as the creative or political project of fat people is a tale rarely told.
Drawing on anti-oppressive values, Fat Studies, queer ethics and creative practice, Fat Body Work traces the shifting realities of fatphobia, ageing and care. It blends experimental and embodied research, critical reflection, short essays, archival writings, drawings and poetry.
(Taken from Charlotte's website)We will host the discussion from 18:30 - 19:30 and then we will be joined by Charlotte herself until 20:00 to answer questions and share thoughts.
Grab a copy here!
This is an online only event, the Zoom link will be sent 24hrs before the club meeting!
For more details or to ask any questions, pop us a message on Instagram - FatLibLondon or FatClubBtnWe cannot wait to chat you about the book and to get the opportunity to speak to Charlotte <3
