Hike and Learn Event - Let's Get Cooking.
Details
Short Day Hike with Trail Cooking Practice
Public / Moderate
Activity Leaders: Wayne Vassello
The purpose of this trip is to give the hikers an opportunity to try out their cooking gear with a little guidance and some tips. So bring out that new stove you haven't used yet or that backpacking meal you are wondering if you will like. This is a low risk way of getting some practice and seeing what other hikers eat and how they cook it.
We will take a short hike out to a somewhat remote campsite, cook our lunch and hike back to the trailhead. The hike is about 2.5 miles each way for a total of about 5 miles. Campsite has shade, a couple of picnic tables and a fire pit/grill. Also, a water source to filter water.
We may or may not build a quick fire to demonstrate some different options in cooking, but don't count on it for your lunch as we really won't be there too long.
The hike will begin at 10:00 AM and we will be back to our vehicles about 2:00 PM. There is no entry fee into the park.
As rain is common this time of year, I would expect to encounter water on the trail but we will be keeping to some forest service roads to keep us out of the deep stuff. Please DO NOT bring any type of waterproof shoe or boot. It really won't help in the long run and a non waterproof shoe will dry out quick enough.
Please keep an eye on the weather and be prepared for rain and cooler temps.
Important:
Each individual is responsible for their own food and water on this event. Neither the FTA chapter nor the activity leaders are providing food or beverages for this event. If any attendees choose to offer or share any items brought, that is entirely up to the individuals. There are no trash cans at camp, so plan to practice "leave no trace" and pack out all your trash.
If you have any questions please let me know.
