Discussion - Free Will

Details

Thinkers and Drinkers. The meeting will be at Stodgy Brewing Company. I’ll put a small (Space Force) flag on the table so you know where to go. The topic is Free Will. Some questions to ponder before the meeting are:

  1. Do we have free will in general?
  2. Do we have radical free will, i.e., even if someone had complete knowledge they still could not predict what you will do?
  3. If we don’t have free will, and are causally determined, are we responsible for our actions?
  4. What is the will?
  5. What does freedom entail?
  6. If you are physically restrained or brainwashed or manipulated into doing something, can you act freely?
  7. Is it possible to be mentally free but not physically free, or vice versa?
  8. Take the following case. You have the opportunity to perform one of two actions, A and B, but there is a chip in your brain that will prevent you from performing B. You happen to choose A. Did you freely choose?
  9. Is free will compatible with determinism (determinism being that the world is lawlike and follows predictable and reducible physical causationion)?
  10. Is there a difference between free will or lack of free will and fate?
  11. Are all non-human entities and objects determined, or are some non-human entities and objects free?
