Details
Thinkers and Drinkers. The meeting will be at Stodgy Brewing Company. I’ll put a small (Space Force) flag on the table so you know where to go. The topic is Free Will. Some questions to ponder before the meeting are:
- Do we have free will in general?
- Do we have radical free will, i.e., even if someone had complete knowledge they still could not predict what you will do?
- If we don’t have free will, and are causally determined, are we responsible for our actions?
- What is the will?
- What does freedom entail?
- If you are physically restrained or brainwashed or manipulated into doing something, can you act freely?
- Is it possible to be mentally free but not physically free, or vice versa?
- Take the following case. You have the opportunity to perform one of two actions, A and B, but there is a chip in your brain that will prevent you from performing B. You happen to choose A. Did you freely choose?
- Is free will compatible with determinism (determinism being that the world is lawlike and follows predictable and reducible physical causationion)?
- Is there a difference between free will or lack of free will and fate?
- Are all non-human entities and objects determined, or are some non-human entities and objects free?
