# Une tête coupée, deux chapiteaux. Le martyre de saint Jean-Baptiste dans la sculpture

Conférence - Histoire(s) de jeunes chercheurs Mardi 8 avril 18h À Toulouse, au début du 12e siècle, le prieuré de la Daurade et la cathédrale Saint-Étienne accueillent chacun, dans leur cloître, une représentation sculptée du martyre biblique de saint Jean-Baptiste. Ces deux chapiteaux romans, aujourd'hui déposés au musée des Augustins, ont sans cesse été comparés l'un avec l'autre, dans une approche évolutionniste de l'histoire de l'art, essentiellement pour voir dans le second une amélioration du premier. Mais une étude renouvelée, croisée et surtout particulière, de cette paire d'images permet d'en questionner à nouveau le propos visuel autant que les enjeux de la commande. A Severed Head, Two Capitals. The Martyrdom of Saint John the Baptist in Sculpture
Lecture - Story(ies) of Young Researchers Tuesday, April 8, 6 p.m. In Toulouse, at the beginning of the 12th century, the Priory of La Daurade and Saint-Étienne Cathedral each housed, in their cloisters, a sculpted representation of the biblical martyrdom of Saint John the Baptist. These two Romanesque capitals, now on display at the Musée des Augustins, have been constantly compared with each other, in an evolutionary approach to art history, essentially to see in the second an improvement of the first. But a renewed, cross-examination, and, above all, specific study of this pair of images allows us to question once again their visual purpose as well as the implications of the commission.
