The "Finished Work of the Cross" encapsulates the profound spiritual truths stemming from Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection, as declared in John 19:30 when He said, “It is finished.” This signifies the completion of God’s plan to atone for humanity’s sins, granting salvation to those who believe in Christ (Romans 10:9-10). Beyond initial salvation—marked by repentance and forgiveness of sins (1 John 1:9)—this work provides a foundation for spiritual growth and fruitfulness, countering the enemy’s deceptions that seek to pull believers away from living by faith in Christ (Matthew 13:18-23). The evil one promotes reliance on self-effort and law, fostering unfruitfulness, whereas abiding in Christ’s finished work yields spiritual fruit (Galatians 3:3; Titus 2:11-12).
Four Key Truths from Romans 5 (Amplified Bible):
- Standing Forever in Grace (Romans 5:1-2): Through faith in Christ, believers are justified, declared righteous, and stand firmly in God’s grace. This is not a wavering state but a permanent position, unshaken by sin, as grace empowers us to overcome ungodliness, not license sin (Titus 2:11-12).
- God’s Love in Our Hearts (Romans 5:5b): The Holy Spirit pours God’s unconditional (agape) love into believers’ hearts permanently, not fluctuating based on behavior. This assures us of God’s constant love, unlike the uncertainty of worldly affection.
- Reconciled to God (Romans 5:10): Christ’s death reconciles believers, restoring them to God’s original purpose of indwelling His Spirit, broken by the Fall. This reconciliation breaks sin’s dominion and grants a ministry to share this truth with others (2 Corinthians 5:18).
- Reign in Life (Romans 5:17): Believers, made righteous through Christ, possess His resurrection power and authority to reign over demonic forces, no longer dead in Adam but alive in Christ. This equips us for spiritual victory now and future reigning as priests (Revelation 5:10).
Reflection Questions in the Socratic Style:
- How does standing forever in grace (Romans 5:1-2) change your view of your relationship with God compared to striving under law, as Galatians 3:3 warns against?
- In what ways does knowing God’s love is permanently poured into your heart (Romans 5:5b) free you from the enemy’s lie that your actions diminish His love?
- As one reconciled to God (Romans 5:10), how might you embrace your ministry of reconciliation (2 Corinthians 5:18) in your daily life?
- Considering you reign in life through Christ (Romans 5:17), how can you exercise His authority to overcome challenges, trusting the Spirit’s power within you?
These truths, revealed through Romans 5, call believers to seek ongoing revelation from the Holy Spirit (1 John 2:27) and to reject the enemy’s deceptions, fostering a fruitful life rooted in Christ’s finished work. Prayer Prompt: Lord, open my eyes to the depths of Your finished work on the cross. By Your Spirit, reveal how I stand in grace, am filled with Your love, am reconciled to You, and reign in life through Christ. Guard me from the evil one’s lies, and help me bear fruit for Your glory. Amen.
