We’re all about making the outdoors (and Seattle) feel more welcoming, whether you're brand new to the area or just looking for your people.
We host a variety of events -many free, some ticketed- but open to everyone. And if you’re loving the vibe, becoming a member gives you access to even more: think group hikes, bike rides, paddling trips, climbing, gear rentals, coffee discounts, and a growing community of outdoor-lovers just like you. Intro to Backpacking Series: Gear, Gadgets, & getting started.
Basecamp Cafe and Bar, 800 E Thomas St A, Seattle, WA, US#### Welcome to the Gearhouse's Intro to Backpacking Series, where we aim to answer all your questions on how and where to get started backpacking.
Part 1. Sit down with Gearhouse staff for a relaxed "fireside" chat covering backpacking essentials. We’ll start by breaking down gear into easy-to-understand systems, helping you navigate the many small details that come with packing for the backcountry. You’ll get a hands-on look at how to pack a backpack efficiently, what essential items to bring, and how to prepare for various conditions. Additionally, we’ll discuss key considerations such as where to go, how to stay safe around wildlife, and best practices for responsible outdoor hygiene.

- How to pack
- How to manage wildlife
- Personal hygiene
- And much more!
