Rapidan Camp - 7.6 moderately strenuous miles - 1,300 feet elevation gain
Details
This is one of our favorite hikes in SNP. Here is a description (we will do it in reverse): https://myhikes.org/trails/camp-hoover-hike
Please read the description to decide if this hike is for you. There is one water crossing where a pole or two might be handy. We will stop at Rapidan Camp for lunch/snack and a bathroom break.
We will meet in the Milam Gap parking lot in Shenandoah National Park (milepost 52.4) and head out after brief introductions.
If you want to learn about Hoover's Rapidan Camp, here is the description from the SNP website. https://www.nps.gov/places/000/rapidan-camp.htm
RSVP Expectations: If you are unable to attend, please update your RSVP to “No” as soon as possible. This allows hikers on the waitlist the opportunity to join.
Dog Policy: No dogs, please — we love them, but leave your furry friend at home.
Recommended Items: Broken-in Hiking Boots, Trekking Poles, Lunch/Snacks, 2-3 Liters of Water, Good Day Pack, Tick Repellent, Layers of Clothing for Colder Winter Weather, and any additional items you need for comfort and safety.
Shenandoah National Park (SNP) Pass: Bring your pass or purchase a day pass for $30.
Start Time: We begin our hikes on time. We may not have cell service at the trailhead. Please be on time.
Weather Policy: The hike may be canceled or postponed the day before if rain or icy trails are forecast. We’ll make the final decision by 7:00 a.m. on the morning of the hike and post updates in the comments. Steady rain with not much chance of clearing and/or dangerous conditions will call for postponing the hike.
