Meet at the Silver Step Falls parking area, just past Raven Cliff Falls Parking, off of highway 276 by 9:15am. Our hike will begin at 9:30am.

Folks, I'm going to delay the Shining Creek Path and Big East Fork hike closer to spring. There would be too many icy spots due to recent winter weather. The week before this hike temps briefly reach 34 degrees at Cold Mountain for one day with temps dipping back to the teens consistently. This trail is a challenge without the winter extremes.

Our hike will begin via the Silver Step Falls Trail at 9:30am sharp. Silver Step to Jones Gap to Rainbow Falls Trail. We will return via Rainbow Falls, Jones Gap, and Coldspring Branch back to our cars.

The current forecast for Feb. 7 is clear and cold. Temps will be in the mid to upper twenties the entire day. There will be ample thawing from the days prior to this hike. Icing on the trails should still be an issue in spots, yet the roads should be clear with temps reaching the upper 30's and low 40's throughout the week.

When possible, our pace will average 2.5 mph and at times 3.0 mph where footing is secure and solid. Great care must be taken near streams and wet spots that cross the trail. Our ascents via Rainbow Falls and Coldspring Branch will slow due to steep climbs.
