Greenways Walk & Potluck
Details
The Allegheny Group of the Sierra Club is partnering with City Girls Who Walk Pittsburgh and Arts Excursions Unlimited, under the guidance of local activist and Hazelwood resident Matt Peters for an educational outing in the heart of Pittsburgh. We will learn about the city's greenway system and their new greenways expansion program, which is at a critical stage where public involvement could mean a lot for protecting Pittsburgh forests. After a brief overview, we will walk along the Sylvan Avenue corridor and the surrounding neighborhoods to see firsthand the important existing and potential greenways.
After our walk we will gather together at the nearby Arts Excursions Unlimited center for a potluck and discussion on how to keep our urban forests protected. We will then assist those interested in writing their council members and in completing the city greenways survey.
Please note that the walk is about 1.5 miles and includes a couple steep hills and stairways, with some sections getting muddy after rain. We encourage you to bring food to share for the potluck at the end, but it is not required. If you do bring food, we can heat it up in the Arts Excursions Unlimited kitchen. If you have concerns about your food going bad in the car, we can arrange for you to drop it off in the kitchen fridge before the outing.
